WHAT ARE COOKIES?
Cookies are small text strings that a website can send to your device (PC, notebook, smartphone, tablet) while browsing; they are usually stored directly on the browser used for navigation. The same website that transmitted them can then read and record the cookies residing on the device to obtain various types of information. Which ones? Each type of cookie has a well-defined role.
HOW MANY TYPES OF COOKIES ARE THERE?
There are two fundamental macro-categories with different characteristics: technical cookies and profiling cookies.
Technical cookies are generally necessary for the proper functioning of the website and to allow navigation; without them, you might not be able to view pages correctly or use certain services. For example, a technical cookie is essential to keep the user logged in throughout their visit to a website, or to store language settings, display settings, and so on.
Technical cookies can be further divided into:
• navigation cookies, which guarantee normal navigation and use of the website (allowing, for example, a purchase to be made or authentication to access restricted areas);
• analytics cookies, assimilated to technical cookies only when used directly by the site operator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site itself.
• functionality cookies, which allow the user to navigate based on a series of selected criteria (for example, language, font size) in order to improve the service provided to them.
Profiling cookies are more sophisticated. These cookies are designed to profile the user and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user while browsing.
Cookies can also be classified as:
• session cookies, which are deleted immediately upon closing the browser;
• persistent cookies, which—unlike session cookies—remain within the browser for a set period of time. They are used, for example, to recognize the device connecting to the site, facilitating authentication operations for the user.
WHICH COOKIES DO WE USE?
BROWSING DATA
The computer systems and software procedures used to operate this site acquire, during their normal operation, some personal data whose transmission is implicit in the use of Internet communication protocols.
This category of data includes IP addresses or domain names of the computers and terminals used by users, URI/URL (Uniform Resource Identifier/Locator) addresses of the requested resources, the time of the request, the method used to submit the request to the server, the size of the file obtained in response, the numerical code indicating the status of the response given by the server (successful, error, etc.), and other parameters relating to the user’s operating system and IT environment.
These data, necessary for the use of web services, are also processed for the purpose of:
– obtaining statistical information on the use of services (most visited pages, number of visitors per hour or day, geographical areas of origin, etc.);
– monitoring the correct functioning of the services offered.
Browsing data do not persist for more than seven days (except for any need to investigate crimes by the judicial authority).
HOW CAN CONSENT TO THE INSTALLATION OF COOKIES BE GIVEN OR REFUSED?
Consent to the installation of cookies can be freely revoked at any time.
In particular, the User can manage preferences relating to cookies directly within their browser to prevent third parties from installing them.
Through browser preferences, it is also possible to delete cookies installed in the past, including the cookie in which consent to the installation of cookies by this site may have been saved. In this case, the user will be treated as a new visitor upon the next visit and, if they wish, must provide new consent.
The User can find information on how to manage cookies with some of the most popular browsers, for example, at the following addresses:
Apple Safari and
Regarding cookies installed by third parties (as is the case with Google Analytics), the user can manage their settings and revoke consent by visiting the relative opt-out link (if available), using the tools described in the third party’s privacy policy, or by contacting them directly.
Notwithstanding the above, the User may also make use of the information provided by EDAA (EU), Network Advertising Initiative (USA) and Digital Advertising Alliance (USA), DAAC (Canada), DDAI (Japan) or other similar services. With these services, it is possible to manage the tracking preferences of most advertising tools. IDI therefore recommends that Users use these resources in addition to the information provided in this document.
